Eddie broke a string while appearing at the Paladium Theatre in Manchester (not to be confused with London).bHe made hardly any adjustments, just carried on with his set. A true pro! Today they would have spare guitars etc., not then. From o d fan, Mike Spenser. (61yrs). email spenser.mike@googlemail.com
It's comparatively rare to break a string on a Gretsch. I have used Gretsch 6120s like Eddie's for over 11 years, and have played Eddie's music on them, and I have never snapped a string! I recently bought an Eddie "clone" guitar which has the black Gibson p90 pick up that Eddie put on his, and even has clear scratchplate (Eddie didn't like the gold finish and scraped it all off!)
Info: Pickgard on his /Gretsch 6120 guitar: In mid 1956 he replaced the front dearmond pickup with a dog ear P-90 pickup, and the holes and shape don't fit his original place, so he got a new pickgard from a Gretsch Streamliner 1955 model, and he scratch the color under to put it half clear,so this pickgard is not the Chet Atkins gold that he had first, he probably keep it anyway!!
Eddie used extra light gauge strings (banjo strings) for the top three and they did break more easily than what were considered standard guitar strings.
